Current transformers usually consist of a silicon steel ring magnetic core wrapped around multiple coils of copper wire. A conductor carrying a primary current passes through the ring. Thus, the main part of the CT consists of a "turn". The primary winding may be a permanent part of a current transformer, a copper bar that carries current through the core. Window current transformers are also common. They can run a circuit cable through the middle of an iron core opening to provide a single-turn primary winding. To improve accuracy, the main body should be located in the center of the aperture.

Current transformers can be installed in switchgear or inside equipment enclosures, but free-standing outdoor current transformers are often used. In the switchstation, the housing of the live current transformer is energized mostly at in-line voltage and must be installed on an insulator.
